Vintage Birchcraft of High Wycombe Utility Sideboard
A stunning vintage Birchcraft of High Wycombe sideboard, beautifully re-finished and given a new lease of life while retaining its wonderful original character.
The main body has been finished in Fusion Mineral Paint – Coal Black, creating a dramatic contrast with the drawer fronts and top, which have been carefully sanded back to reveal the beautiful natural wood beneath and sealed with beeswax wood polish.
One of the really special features of this piece is the CC41 Utility mark stamped to the back.
The CC41 mark was introduced in Britain in 1941 as part of the Utility Furniture Scheme during the Second World War and post-war austerity period. With furniture and materials heavily rationed, the scheme was designed to produce strong, functional and well-designed furniture using limited materials and decoration. New furniture was also strictly controlled, with permits required in many circumstances.
So this isn’t just a beautiful piece of furniture — it has a genuine little piece of British history built into it. www
The original decorative detailing, beautiful proportions and combination of painted and natural wood give this sideboard a wonderful Art Deco/Utility-era character, while the contemporary finish makes it equally at home in a modern or more traditional interior.
